Weather reigns on Middleton's parade

A wet weekend saw a reduced overs match and a draw at Royton on Saturday and a complete washout for the main event on Sunday, the Wood Cup semi-final against Rochdale at Towncroft.

The cup-tie will now be played on August 5, which was the original date pencilled in for the final. The new date for the final will be announced shortly.

Middleton v Royton Saturday June 30 2012

RAIN won the day on Saturday at the Paddock, writes Rod Highton.

Just 10 minutes before the start of play the rain came and the players eventually took the field at 3.30 in what had become a 30-over game.

Middleton won the toss and chose to bat. Scott Stanworth and Skipper Steve Davey put together a stand of 61 in 16 overs in difficult conditions and a rain break of 20 minutes before Stanworth (23) danced down the track to Royton's professional Mohamed Khan and was stumped by Craig Joy. Without addition to the score, Davey followed Stanworth back to the pavilion when he was bowled by Mark Woodward for 32.

Middleton's professional Michael Smith and Tom Hardman started sedately with both batsmen getting themselves in before the rain came again and tea was taken.

After tea both batsmen started to take the attack to Royton and put together a superb stand of 93 off just 73 balls  and in the last ten overs the pair added 88 runs which took Middleton up to  154 before Khan picked up both batsmen.

Smith was caught by Khurrum Hussain for 49 off 36 balls. His innings included three sixes and three fours.

Hardman was caught by Woodward for 41 off 45 balls with including five fours. Quite a decent total and one that was going to prove a challenge for  Royton.

Royton had progressed to 10 for nought off just over three overs before the rain came again and this time there was to be no return as the umpires had no choice but to abandoned the game with both teams picking up two points.

Great credit must be given to Royton and both umpires in trying to get the game played but unfortunately the rain was the winner again.
