Tuesday, 05 May 2015

On Sunday Middleton 1st IX gained a vital 5 points against newly instated Heyside at Towncroft. Professional Ernest Kemm spearheaded the Moonrakers to victory with a five wicket haul, and 55 not out in a partnership worth 99 with Captain Grant Jones.

It was Jones who hit the winning runs which delivered adeserved win for the 1st XI by 8 wickets. Middleton bowled well to restrict the visitors to 167 at tea. Kemm’s removal of Heyside professional Van Schalkwyk for a duck was an important wicket as he miss judged a slog-sweep which found the hands of Rhys Tierney at deep square leg. In the middle of the innings Kemm was also backed up with some good bowling from Walker who got one wicket

Opening the batting Tierney and Walker built a good foundation for a successful run chase as Middleton reached 50 without loss. However with the score on 63 Middleton lost their first wicket as Tierney returned to the pavilion. Professional Kemm then began to steadily push the runs on, rotating the strike against the slow bowling and punishing the short bowling of Van Schalkwyk who persisted to bowl back of a length

After the fall of the second wicket, Jones and Kemm were clinical and eventually secured the second win of the season for the 1st XI which put Middleton at the top of the Central Lancashire League championship division going into week four of the season.

Saturday’s visit to Oldham lasted 7 overs as rain lead to play being abandoned. The hosts’ were 35 for 2 when play was stopped meaning the teams shared two points each.
