MAGNIFICENT MIDDLETON LIFT THE BURTON CUP
Monday, 24 July 2017
How fitting that possibly the last ever Burton Cup Final for second elevens,  named after proud Middletonian Albert Burton should result in a comprehensive win for the Moonrakers. Gareth Hughes men gave a performance of outstanding quality as they completely overwhelmed the favourites Glodwick, who also had the advantage of playing on home turf, having won the toss for venue.
Over 100 Middletonians made the trip up the Abbeyhills Road to the home of Glodwick which has seen massive improvements over the years thanks to Dave Challoner and his band of loyal volunteers. It was a sun drenched day as Gareth Hughes won the toss and invited the home team to have the first knock on their own turf.

Middleton March on with Two Wins
Tuesday, 18 July 2017

Saturday brought Milnrow to Middleton and they will be joining the Moonrakers next year as they make the switch to the Lancashire League with their top professional Mohammed Saeed Anwar junior. Batting first,  Middleton again relied on their professional Chris Williams to time his innings to perfection with a well crafted 51 including six fours.

Once again Chris provided a sound base for his teammates. This allowed others to open up and we had good contributions from Grant Jones with 25, Skipper Walker 12,   James Tierney 19 and Zain Tahir 18.  Middleton were also indebted to young Rhys Tierney who had a super knock of 28 including a couple of sixes and a superbly executed Dilscoop to the delight of the watching supporters. A Dilscoop is a reverse scoop of the ball over the wicket-keepers head for a four. Rhys was unfortunate that Middleton had reached the end of the overs with him looking extremely comfortable. At the end of the reduced 40 overs due to rain, Middleton were 177 for 7 wickets.

Tierney Comes of Age
Tuesday, 18 July 2017

They say a week is a long time in Politics, it seems that it’s even longer in the world of cricket.  James Tierney seems to have come such a long way in the last seven days. From a useful prospect on the periphery of the first team he seems to have now enhanced his reputation.

Flashback to the 6th May v Micklehurst at Towncroft and Chippy was down to bat at number 9, and second change bowler. On Friday night he opened the bowling and came in at number 4 and ripped apart the Saddleworth bowling with 38 off a mere 18 balls. He must be slipping , as the previous night he smashed the same score off just 16 balls against Littleborough in an Under 19’s match.

Seconds Reach the Burton Cup Final
Wednesday, 12 July 2017

Whilst the focus has been largely on the first team’s unbeaten run in the league, the second team have also remained unbeaten and on Saturday reached the final of the Burton Cup. As the sun shone on Towncroft a reasonable crowd had assembled as the Greenfield team took to the field as the bowling team.  Opening the batting for Middleton was the hard hitting batsman Reece Jones and the up and coming youngster Leighton Le Carpentier. Leighton fresh from representing Lancashire East under 17’s had clearly caught the eye of the County selectors not only for his ability with the bat but also his agility as a wicket keeper. Indeed both I and the Lancashire selectors are watching closely the development of Leighton as a keeper and hopefully will get the chance to see him behind the sticks on a more regular basis.
