Tahir Leads Middleton to Victory PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 16 June 2015

An outstanding knock of 63 not out from Zain Tahir helped the 1st XI take five points at The Racecourse against Radcliffe CC on Saturday afternoon. This was an impressive performance with plenty of character, showing that the 1st XI can compete at the top.

Bowling first, opportunities were coming Middleton’s way over after over as Radcliffe persisted to play aggressive but risky cricket as not one of the top five batsmen made twenty. Mark Buckley took the first three wickets reducing the hosts to 34 for 3. This was then backed up by Ernest Kemm as he got in on the act claiming the fourth wicket. Buckley and Kemm were the pick of the bowlers as they both claimed four wickets each. However, they were supported well by Gareth Hughes who picked up two important wickets to ensure Radcliffe’s innings came to an end in the 44 over.

With 154 the target and a first half, on the whole well done, wickets in the hand were going to be key to victory. There was, however an early set back as Walker was removed early with the total at 7, which meant that responsibility was left to new promoted opener Zain Tahir.

Just as Kemm was beginning to look settled he fell lbw to the Radcliffe opener Rehman. Skipper Jones came to the crease and began to build a partnership with Tahir who relished the opportunity against some good seam bowling. Just as Jones was beginning to score quickly Rehman struck again making a mess of the stumps for the second time.

Tahir had to continue to rebuild, although with a lower order collapse this was becoming increasingly difficult. With the scores on 120 for 8, Buckley came to the crease and began to show his experience with good shot selection against the Leg spin of Professional Majeed and helped Tahir get to his Maiden half century for the Moonrakers, (perhaps his most cherished half century).

With the scores tied Buckley got a 2 and saw Middleton over the line with a one wicket victory.
