For many it was their first experience travelling along the highway to another mill town. We had heard a lot of pressing issues to be mindful of. The main one in particular was the weather conditions. Traditionally an extremely cold venue to play at however on this particular Sunday the sun was out and it was a lovely day for the gentleman’s game.

After a slight delay in play due to the popping creases being marked in the incorrect positions we were bowling, after losing the toss. On what was an extremely slow wicket that was really just hard mud we were unable to make any inroads into their top order with Saq the best of the bowlers having figures of 0/2 off 4 overs. At 0/80, we caught a break thanks to Danny Core. Soon after both openers were gone, Oldham’s number 3 came in and slogged a few over the long on boundary and their pro who although given not out to a caught behind decision took advantage with a classy knock before he was dismissed by the wily veteran Steve Davey. With the score lingering around the 160 mark Davey took his rare opportunity with the ball and did serious amounts of damage accompanied by a brilliant run-out by George Walker (never run on a mis-field). He finished the innings taking 5 wickets for no more than 25 runs from his 4 and a bit overs, helping to bowl Oldham out for 180.

Tea was taken and before we knew it George walker was off to a flyer with 2 off the first ball. However a couple of balls later he was the first victim. 1/2, The pro joined Nichols and set about resurrecting the innings. The score moved briskly to 40 with Edmeades hitting some towering sixes over mid-wicket including one that hit the top of the pavilion.

Soon there after the collapse started, first Nichols caught at long-off then Edmeades caught and bowled, skipper Jones was also out LBW the very next ball to another precarious decision. 4/40 and we looked to Davey and Warren to steady the ship. It came but only briefly as Davey was also removed. Danny Core would join Warren and they started to build what looked like a match winning partnership with some excellent cut shots and nimble running between the wickets.  Core was then bowled by a ball that spun and kept low causing another mini collapse as Saqib and Mike Pritchard fell soon thereafter.

Warren, after being our best batsman for the day had a brain fade and took on an impossible single and was short of his ground. Holmes and Harris tried their best to get Middleton at least 1 point but the result was always too far out of reach.

A poor batting performance accompanied by being unable to make inroads into Oldham’s batting line up early, cost Middleton dearly in what has easily been our worst defeat of the season thus far.

But as they say “onwards and upwards” as we encounter our second T20 fixture at home this Friday night and then again away at Crompton for a league fixture on Saturday, So get along and support the boys from Towncroft as we strive to make serious inroads into this CLL ladder.
