Victories For Both Sides PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 02 May 2014
Last Sunday saw a superb double day victory for both Middleton sides - the 1st XI coming up trumps against Unsworth and the 2nd XI defeating Royton at Towncroft.

At New Pole Lane, the 1st XI invited the hosts to bat first on a damp wicket that was difficult to score on.  Nobody from the home side really managed to press on once in - the top score being just 27; jointly shared by number 3 Fazil and Professional Chris Williams. Despite this, Unsworth sensibly batted all of their overs, eventually grinding their way to 154 for 9 in their allotted 50 overs.

The pick of the Middleton bowlers was Danny Core with 4 for 32 in what was a solid bowling and fielding performance by the visitors; worthy mention too for Joel Harris, Matt Prichard and Paul Bennett who all kept it tight to frustrate Unsworth.

In reply the Middleton innings started badly with Overseas Amateur Harry Nicholls falling for a duck with the score on 1. Then followed a brilliant 73 run partnership between George Walker (who earlier in the match had got the breakthrough for the visitors with a wonderful run out) and Professional Grant Edmeades which took the game away from the home side.  Both batting sensibly and patiently, they too grinded down the opposition, waiting for the bad ball and put it away when the oportunity arose.

Walker fell for 23 and then Captain Grant Jones the very next ball to give the home side a slight sniff; however, veteran Steve Davey (20) added 35 with Edmeades to once again take the game away from Unsworth. When Davey fell for a loose shot, caught by Fazil at midwicket, the visitors still required 46 from 13 overs on a wicket that was not getting any better.

Despite this, the magnificent Edmeades was completely at ease as he and the recalled Sam Warren (13) added 30 to take the Moonrakers within sight of victory. Depite Warren being run out after a disastrous mix-up, both Edmeades and spin-king Core saw the visitors home with 2 overs to spare.

Edmeades finished 84 not out to continue his brilliant start to the season after scores of 59 not out vs. Uppermill, 71 vs. Rochdale and 108 vs. Crompton.

- The 2nd XI made it 2 wins out of 2 with a hardearnt win against follow relegated side Royton. Despite winning the toss, the visitors made a below-par 160, with wickets again for new-boy Mohammad Sohail (3 for 32), Mark Buckley (2 for 50), Matt Foden (2 for 33) and especially Gareth Hughes (2 for 18) who made a welcome return after injury.

In reply, Mohammad Shahid, who topped the Premier Division averages last season, made 51 in what was the only highlight at the top of the order for the Moonrakers. With the home side stuttering at 116 for 7 and on the verge of defeat, it was down once again to Tom Rutter (19) and all-rounder Matt Foden (38 not out) to see the Moonrakers home.
