Edmeades and Holmes Lead Middleton to victory PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 02 September 2013

The First Eleven secured their first outright victory of the season as they beat Milnrow at home.

Batting first, Middleton scored a below par 157. Thanks mainly to a half century from Grant Edmeades. Edmeades came to the crease with the score on 5 for 1 after Scott Stanworth was bowled by Aaron Brown for 4.
The professional looked assured against the dangerous spin of Babar Naeem, as he guided his team to a competitive total.

But as what has happened in the past, one wicket falling brings on a collapse, and from being 104 for 2, Middleton finished on 152 all out.

With a relatively low total to defend, Middleton knew that wickets were needed. Edmeades and Steve Holmes opened the bowling, and bowled straight through the Milnrow innings.

It was believed that the key to winning the game was to claim the wicket of Naeem early, and with the score on 21, Edmeades claimed the prized scalp.
With wickets now falling, the game was slowly sliding in favour of Middleton. But Max Power was still at the crease there was still a chance for Milnrow.

With the pressure and the run rate increasing, the batsmen needed to go for the big shots, but Power went for one big shot too many as he was caught by Steve Davey off the bowling of Holmes for 55.

With the score on 111 for 9, Middleton sensed blood and it only took 7 more deliveries until it was all over as Milnrow were bowled out for 112.

- The Second Eleven made it 3 wins out of their last 4 games, as they produced a comprehensive 8 wicket victory against Werneth.
Batting first, Werneth had no answer to the bowling of Gareth Hughes and Chris Shaw as they picked up five wickets-a-piece and they were bowled out for 123.

Middleton needed to get off to a solid start, and they did so as Mo Shahid and Matt Collins put on 50 for the first wicket before Collins was given out LBW.

Shahid was the star of the chase, as he batted through the pain of a badly injured toe to finish on 84 not out and Middleton chased the total down with 21 overs to spare.

- Next Sunday, the First Eleven travel to Littleborough and the Second Eleven are at home to Royton. Both games start at 12:30pm. On Saturday, the Third Eleven are playing Todmorden at home which is 1pm start.
