Middleton v Norden Saturday July 7 2012

No home comfort as champs reign

MIDDLETON lost their third home game of the season against champions Norden at Towncroft on Saturday, writes ROD HIGHTON.

The match had a 2 oclock start and became a 45-over game due once again to the unseasonable rain that had fallen on Friday.

Norden won the toss and put Middleton in to bat in the damp conditions and the toss proved vital.

George Walker and skipper Ste Davey opened the batting and Middleton had reached 21 in the eigth over when a ball from Chris Humphreys looped up off the bat of Davey (8) and the catch was taken by Harvey Fitton.

Four runs later Middleton lost their second wicket when Walker was lbw to Ollie Makin for 14.

Professional Michael Smith and Grant Jones took the score to 41 before Jones (12) was run out by Norden professional Michael Price.

Jones had driven a ball from Humphreys which Fitton did well to stop and shied at the end that Smith was at. Price backing up proceeded to throw down the stumps at the striker's end as Jones ambled back in.

Tom Hardman helped Smith put on Middleton's highest stand of the game of 27 with both batsmen struggling to time the ball in the conditions before Hardman was caught close in by Phil Docker off Makin for five and seven runs later it got worse when Reece Jones (2) chipped one up and Norden's overseas amateur Ste Pimm took an easy catch off Makin.

Matt Lee was the next to go with the score on 86 when Pimm  took a superb  running catch back over his head off Ste Wild and just two runs later Mark Buckley was run out without troubling the scorers by Price.

Makin picked up two more wickets to take his haul to five when he bowled Dale Highton for two and also Alex Copeland for nine and Middleton were 111-9.

Norden picked up the final wicket on the last ball of the innings as Price got his third run out, that of Zaffer Zaman and Middleton were 123 all out. To prove how difficult the conditions were Smith finished on an unbeaten 51 off 106 balls.

Once again Middleton needed to take early wickets to be in with a shout and that’s what they got when in the second over Zaman had Pimm (0) caught by Buckley with the score on 2-1.

That soon became 12-3 as Hardman picked up the wickets of professional Price caught by Lee for eight and Matt Buckley caught by Grant Jones for 0.

Middleton were in with a shout, but that proved not to be as Nick Brierley and Hashan Malik put on a stand of 35 before Malik was adjudged lbw to Highton for 10 and then a stand of 53 between Brierley and Norden skipper Dexter Fitton took the game away from Middleton before Dexter (29) was caught behind by stand-in wicketkeeper Davey.

Brierley and Harvey Fitton saw Norden home with just under seven overs to spare with Fitton finishing on 12 and Brierley unbeaten on 45 in a knock that almost certainly won the game for Norden.

Next Saturday sees the first team at home to Oldham and the seconds travelling to the Pollards and on Sunday the second team are at home to Second Division leaders Heywood in a local derby whilst the first travel across the motorway to the Crimble.

The 20/20 game away at Clifton was washed out on Friday and will be played this Friday the 13th, wickets pitched 6.15pm.
