Norden v Middleton 20/20

Dale Late Show Destroys Norden

Middleton edged home in a thriller of a game on Monday night at Woodhouse Lane but still have to wait for the result of the Rochdale v Norden game at Redbrook on Friday night, writes Rod Highton.

A Norden win will see the Moonrakers through but if Rochdale prevail it will go down to run rate.

Middleton won the toss and chose to bat first with professional Michael Smith and Captain Ste Davey opening the batting.

They got off to a steady start in the first two overs. The third over from Harvey Fitton was littered with a mixture of no balls and wides and Middleton scored 21 runs off it.

In the next over Chris Humphreys had Davey (11) caught by overseas amateur Ste Pimm and Middleton were 31 for one.

A partnership of 38 between Smith and Hardman took the score to 69 before Hardman was caught low down by Hashan Malik off Olly Makin and 16 runs later Grant Jones (10) was caught by Harvey Fitton again off Makin just two balls after hitting him for a big six.

Norden dismissed Smith with the score on 103, then Harvey Fitton took his second catch off Ste Wild and Smith was gone for 40 in the 15th over.

Norden put the pressure on and Middleton only scored 34 more runs in the face of some tight bowling.

Mark Buckley (5) went lbw to Norden's deputy professional Ashar Zaidi ( Accrington's professional) and three runs later George Walker was stumped by Nick Brierley off Wild for two.

Only three more runs had been added when Scott Stanworth (11) was run out.

Middleton got to 137 due to Danny Core and Reece Jones putting bat to ball and quick running before Reece Jones was superbly caught by Makin off Zaidi for seven. Core remained unbeaten on 12 and Richard Fitton only faced the one ball.

Middleton looked to be about 20 to 30 runs short of a decent target and they now had to produce the goods with the ball if they were going to have a chance of defending the 20/20 trophy any further.

Middleton got off to a flyer when Tom Hardman had Malik lbw with his third ball without troubling the scorers. Pimm joined Zaidi and they quickly took the score up to 28 before Zaidi was caught by the diving Davey off Buckley for 11 and three runs later Middleton had their third wicket when Hardamn had Pimm lbw for 16.

If people thought Norden were going to lie down and die they were wrong as Brierley and Ste Fletcher put together a stand of 54 with Fletcher's contribution being six which threatened to take the game away from Middleton.

However, in a remarkable four balls Dale Highton had the wicket of Brierley for a superb 42 off 35 balls with three sixes and three fours caught by Hardman.

Next ball Fletcher (6) was caught by Fitton and with the fourth ball and Makin's first he was stumped by Stanworth and Norden had slumped to 86 for six with seven overs left.

They battled on and a 30 partnership between Norden captain Dexter Fitton and Chris Humphreys saw the game see-saw one way then the other before Humphreys tied to hit one out of the ground and was comfortably caught by Smith off Core for four.

Four runs later after hitting his first ball for four, Harvey Fitton (4) was bowled next ball by Highton and six runs later the Highton-Stanworth combination teamed up again as Dexter Fitton went for 14 as Highton took his fifth wicket and finished with figures off 4 0 23 5.

So came the last over and Wild hit Core for four first ball but Core came back with just one run conceded in the next three balls and with his fifth ball Buckley tried to put him back over his head for a six only to find Reece Jones running in to take the catch and a delighted Middleton had won by just 5 runs.

A great advert for the 20/20 game despite a relatively low score by both sides. It had several twist and turns and some great catches and some generally good cricket from both teams.
