Middleton's girl wonder Olivia McCusker has been selected to play for Lancashire Under-17s.

It continues a great year of cricketing achievement at Towncroft following on from the senior side's success in the Wood Cup and 20/20 competition.

Middleton made quite a catch in landing schoolgirl Olivia in the first place.

The 16-year-old from Chadderton has already played for the club's Under-18s side, took the fielding prize in front of all the other junior boys the season before last and has now attracted the attention of Lancashire.

Olivia, a pupil at St Matthews in New Moston, was the only girl currently playing with the juniors at Middleton when she started playing and practising there two years ago.

But she has already made giant strides and has formed part of a Rochdale and District Under-15 side and has now made the big leap into the county set-up.

Rochdale's Community Cricket Development Coach Sam Holt, a former Lancashire junior player himself, said: "We have already had Kate Cross from Heywood come through and there are a lot of girls playing cricket in the borough at both high school and primary level. Hopefully, we will find a couple more stars from the area."

Strangely, Olivia, currently does not play for any of her school's sports teams but has in the past played badminton, basketball, netball and football but, as she said: "They don't play cricket."

Olivia's particularly favourite on the cricket field is bowling. She is a left arm spin bowler and likes to wield the bat too but it was her fielding that won her the Juniors fielding prize at Middleton.

"As a left-arm spinner that makes her quite unique and helped her cause," said proud Dad James. "But it's her all-round performance in the field that won her the prize.

"She once dived to catch this full-blooded drive close in which had everbody gasping. All Olivia said was 'If I had known it was going to hurt that much I wouldn't have touched it!'"
