Highton Picks Up Eight As Middleton Stroll Home

Middleton continued their impressive form with a comfortable victory over Werneth at a sun baked Towncroft on Saturday.

Werneth Captain Matthew Taylor elected to bat on a cracker of a track (described as harder than the M62 motorway) and opened the innings alongside John Slater, they had taken the score to 32 in the 10th over when Dale Highton had Slater LBW for 7. Werneth's Professional Hussain Abbas joined Taylor and they also put on 32 before Zaffer Zaman knocked back Taylor's middle stump for 32 and just 3 balls later Zaman picked up his 2nd wicket as he bowled Overseas Amateur Kyle Roberts (4) to leave Werneth on 68/3.
Three runs later Highton picked up his 2nd wicket when he bowled Joe Taylor for 2 and in what proved to be a day to remember for the left arm spinner he then ran through the rest of the Werneth team to finish with superb figures of 21.1-3-63-8. Franco Lendhardt was LBW for 14, next to go was professional Abbas well caught by George Walker. Mark Dronsfield (10) and Michael Wilson (25) were both bowled. Robert Shaw smartly caught behind by Scott Stanworrth for 10 and he wrapped it up by having Mahmood Hassan caught by Ste Davey for 26 as Werneth finished on 180 all out.

The regular opening partnership of Stanworth and Davey opened the innings but with the score on just 10 Stanworth was run out to a smart turn and throw down by Matthew Taylor. Davey and Professional Michael Smith were 1 short of a 50 partnership  when Davey was ct by Wilson off Mark Dronsfield for 23. The out of form Grant Jones joined Smith and soon showed his qualities as he helped the Pro to put on a stand of 72.  Jones played some beautiful drives and pulls before being caught by Abbas off Matthew Taylor for 41.  Once again Smith was showing the crowd his talents as he brought up his 2nd half century of the weekend off 61 balls and once again finished unbeaten on 87 off 97 balls with 12x 4s  to complete a tremendous weekend for both the team and himself.  In form man Tom Hardman also finished unbeaten on 17 and finished the game with a superb shot through extra cover for 4 as Middleton eased home with 11 overs to spare. A great weekend for the team and 2 top performances.

Next Saturday sees the 1st team at home to Littlebrough with the 2nds away and Sunday the 2nd team are at home to Rochdale with the 1sts away both games start at 1.30.

Bank Holiday Tuesday sees the Middleton travel across the motorway to play local rivals Heywoosd in the second game of the 20/20 competition with a start time of 4 oclock.

On Monday 04/06/12 the 3Xi are playing Radcliffe at home.
