    Middleton Cruise to Victory

Middleton began their defence of the John Willie Lees 20/20 Competition with a comfortable win against Rochdale at Towncroft on Friday night.

Rochdale batted first after winning the toss and got off to a decent start and had reached 37 when George Walker bowled Adam Smith for 20 and 4 runs later Richard Fitton picked up the wicket of Rochdale's Overseas Amateur Byron Haycock LBW for 19.  Rochdale's Sri Lankan Professional Malinda Wanapura and James Maurice Scott put together a stand of 43 with some big hitting mainly from Scott before Tom Hardman took a swirling catch on the boundary edge to get rid of Wanapura (12) off the bowling of Dale Highton and the very next ball Scott was well caught again on the boundary by Walker for a well made 31 off 21 balls to leave Rochdale on 84/4. Highton struck again with the score on 92 when he had Greg Butterworth (4) stumped by Scott Stanworth. Danny Core then got in on the act with 2 wickets in 4 balls as he had Michael Harling (1) caught by Walker and Derek Faulkner stumped by Stanworth for 4. Rochdale Captain Darren Cryer (9no) and Ian Haliwell (23no) saw Rochdale through to the end of the overs with a stand of 32 as they finished with a total of 126/7 which did not seem to be enough and was probably around 20 to 30 runs short of a decent total.

Middleton opened with Professional Michael Smith and Captain Ste Davey and had reached 19 when Harling struck twice in 4 balls when he had Davey (1) LBW and Grant Jones caught by Scott for 0 to leave Middleton 20/2. Tom Hardman joined his Pro and they put on a stand of 44 off 32 balls before Hardman was bowled by Wanapura for 27 off just 19 balls. Smith brought up his 50 off just 36 balls and finished on a fine unbeaten 74 off 53 balls with 7x4s 2 x6s and a five as he and Stanworth 17no put on a stand of 66 off 60 balls to see Middleton home with nearly 2 overs to spare.
