Hardmans All Round Performance Sees Middleton Through

Tom Hardman was the star of the show as Middleton set off on the trail to retain the Wood Cup.

Hardman's superb performance of 100 and 19/4 saw him pick up the MOM award from sponsors John Willie Lees.

Middleton took first knock after winning the toss and had moved smoothly to 18 when Ste Davey was well caught at the second attempt by Wicketkeeper Robert Shaw off the bowling of Matt Taylor for 5 and 1 run later Taylor's cousin Joe Taylor had Scott Stanworth (9) caught by Shaw. Nineteen for Two soon became 21/3 when Joe Taylor took a smart catch at slip to get rid of Grant Jones for his second duck of the weekend off Matt Taylor. In contrast to the previous day Michael Smith Middletons Professional was scratching for runs in the face of some good bowling from Werneth and he was to become Shaw's 3rd victim behind the stumps with the score on 59 off the bowling of Michael Wilson. George Walker joined Hardman and the put on a 50 partnership in 33 minutes off 56 balls runs before Walker (20) was caught by Mahmood Ul Hasan off Niaz Khan. Hardman and Matt Lee put together a superb stand of 89 with Hardman going to his 50 off 73 balls and both players were playing the ball around with fluency and Hardman in punishing any bad balls. Hardman was to fall LBW in the last over to Joe Taylor not before reaching his 100 with his second fifty coming off just 46 balls, Hardman's knock contained 11 x4s and was superb in helping his team to a competive score. Lee also fell in the last over caught by John Slater for a very valuable 33 and it left Danny Core 4no and Reece Jones 1 no to a score of 205/7 which looked very unlikely earlier in the afternoon before Hardmans intervention.

Middleton got off to the start they wanted when that man Hardman struck with the 3rd ball of his 1st over when he had Slater caught at slip by Smith. Werneth's Professional Hussian Abbas who had an unbeaten double hundred the last time he played at Towncroft joined his Captain Matt Taylor and soon showed his intentions with a couple of sixes off Zaffer Zaman but Zaman had the last laugh when he tried one to many big hits and was easily stumped by Stanworth for 21 with the score on 23. Hardman struck Two more blows for Middleton the first with the score on 34 when he had Overseas Amateur Kyle Roberts (1) LBW and 1 run later he repeated the feat on Zane Tahir for 0 and Werneth were struggling. Skipper Taylor was the 5th to go when the Stanworth/ Zaman combination combined again to have him stumped for 11 and 1 run Joe Taylor (9) was backed in the shed to another stumping by Stanworth this time off Core. Core then picked up the next three wickets those of Wilson (2) caught and bowled, Shaw caught behind to give Stanworth his 4th victim and Andy Walker well caught at slip by Davey in taking 4 for 15 off 7 overs and Werneth were staring down the barrel at 80/9.Ul Hasan and Khan hung around to take the score up to 93 before that man Hardman fittingly took the last wicket that of Khan LBW for 3.

A good all round performance again from Middleton and a good weekend overall but the stand out performance has got to be that of Hardman.

Next Friday sees the start of the John Willie Lees 20/20 competition with Middleton at home to Rochdale start time 6.15 and Saturday sees the first team again at home to Werneth this time in the league with the 2nds away with a start time of 1.30pm
