Middleton Sail Through To Next Round

Middleton completed a fantastic weekend with a comfortable win at Farnworth the 2010 winners of the Lancashire Cup.

Farnworth Captain Dave Morris won the toss and elected to put Middleton in to bat a move that paid instant dividends when Ste Davey was out LBW to former Littlebrough Professional Victor Walcot for 4 with the score on 10 after surviving a run out. Just 9 runs later Scott Stanworth   was caught behind by Simon Booth again off Walcot. Professional Michael Smith and Grant Jones then put together a fine stand of 96 with Jones in particular playing shots all round the ground in a fine knock of 54 off 67 balls before holding out to Martin Axford of Farnworth Professional Adil Nisar ( Former Clifton Professional ). Tom Hardman joined his Professional and both players began to hammer Farnworth to all parts particularly off the bowling of former Radcliffe Professional Anwar Ul Haq. The pair added 118 off 87 balls with Hardman eventually out one short of his half century with the score on 233. Smith carried on as on the previous day with his 2nd century of the weekend with his first 50 coming off 71 balls and his second fifty coming off just 27 balls, he fell just 2 runs after Hardman for a tremendous 106 off 111 balls with 6 x 4s and 2 massive 6s. George Walker (9no) and Matt Lee (7no) took Middleton through to the end of the 45 overs as Middleton finished on 252/7.

Middleton got off to a good start when Hardman had Axford LBW for 1 with the score on 15. Farnworth then threatened to take the game away from Middleton with Nisar and Ul Haq taking on the Middleton attack. Nisar hit Zaman straight back over his head for a huge six. When the score had reached 96 Middleton got the break through they needed when George Walker having his first bowl of the season had Ul Haq well caught by Danny Core for 42 off 46 balls. Just 4 runs later Walker struck again when he had Nisar LBW for 52 off 48 balls. Morris and Booth steadied the ship a bit but were struggling to get the ball to the boundary and Zaman came back on and removed Morriss bowled for 19. Mark Atherton (6 ) came and went LBW to Dale Highton  to leave Farnworth struggling on 135/6. Farnworth added another 59 runs to end on 194 all out as as Core bowled Steve Collins for 10 and George Walker picked up Booth(17) caught by Grant Jones, Neil Hyde (21) and Lee Sutton (10) both bowled and finished off having Walcot caught by Reece Jones for 0 as he finished with tremendous figures of 8.4- 1-34 -6 as Middleton progressed to the next round where they play Greenmount  also from the Bolton League at home on a date to be agreed.
A fantastic weekend for the team and credit all round for two top team performances.

Next weekend sees a double header with Unsworth the visitors in the league on Saturday and the 2nd team away in the reverse victory and Sunday the 1sts set out to retain the Wood Cup against Werneth also at home and the 2nds at Werneth. Both games start at 1.30.
