Middleton Stun The Champions

What a difference a week makes, after last weeks beating by Heywood. The Moonrakers badly needed a win after losing 2 of the first 3 games and win is what they did in fine style at Woodhouse Lane the home of Champions Norden.

Skipper Ste Davey won the toss and opened alongside Scott Stamworth. They steadily took the score to 28 in the 6th over when Davey ( 10 ) was caught behind by Nick Brierley off Harvey Fitton. Professional Michael Smith joined Stanworth and together they put together a stand of 78 when Stanworth was adjudged LBW off Dexter Fitton and it got worse next ball when Grant Jones was caught close in by Greg Tattersall and Middleton were 106/3. Tom Hardman hit 28 of the next 38 runs before he became Dexter Fittons 3rd wicket out LBW.  Smith had quietly gone to 50 off 75 balls before the big South African started to open his shoulders and his next 50 came off just 36 balls as he and George Walker put on 88 for the 4th wicket before Smith was out for 106 off 114 balls with 11x 4s and 4 x 6s when he was caught by Paul Morrell off Chris Humphreys with score on 232,  Middleton added 8 more runs but not before losing Reece Jones for 3 bowled by Norden Professional Michael Price and the in form George Walker was bowled last ball by Price for a fine 31 off just 37 balls to leave Danny Core 1no as Middleton finished on 240/7 a target that is always getable on Norden but also a decent target to defend.

Price opened Nordens innings alongside Ste Pimm Nordens Kiwi Overseas amateur and Norden got off to a flyer hitting 14 off the first over and they cruised to 23 off the first 3 overs.  Middletons opening bowlers Tom Hardman and Zaffer Zaman then began to get there line and length and pinned down Norden to the extent that by the 10th over Norden were 28/1 having scored just 7 runs in 7 overs, in this time Zaman struck a major blow for Middleton when he bowled Price for 16.  Pimm started to get in to his stride but with the score on 53 Zaman struck again when he had Pimm ( 25 ) LBW in what was a superb opening spell for his team and just 6 runs later Norden lost there 3rd wicket when Dale Highton bowled Harvey Fitton for 1.  Middleton were then frustrated by a stand of 78 between Brierley and Humphreys who had been promoted up the order. Brierley  was the main aggressor but Humphreys was to be the next wicket down when he had reached 25 he was out LBW to Highton. Two runs later Nordens fate was almost sealed when Brierley was bowled by Core for a top knock of 63 off 70 balls with 7 x 4s and 2 x 6s.  Tattersall and Hashan Malik attempted one last effort to get Norden back in the game with Malik hitting 29 off only 18 balls but it was Tattersall who fell first for 3 out of a stand of 32 when he was bowled to become Highton's 3rd victim. The returning Tom Hardman shattered Maliks stumps and the writing was on the wall for Norden, though they did managed to get a bonus point before eventually being all out for 186 with Hardman picking up Paul Morrel ( 2 ) and Highton picking up Phil Docker caught Matt Lee and Scott Stanworth catching Dexter Fitton as Highton finished with his first 5 wicket haul of the season. A much needed win and 5 points for Middleton and much improved performance.
