Middleton v Milnrow

Middleton welcomed local rivals Milnrow to Towncroft and with the forecast of Thunderstorms later in the day Skipper Dale Highton won the toss and elected to put Milnrow in to bat.

Rob White and Keelan Shipley opened the batting and in his 2nd over with 4 on the board Middleton Professional Chris Williams struck to have White lbw. Saiman Saleem joined Shipley and together they put one stand of 81 with Shipley reaching his fifty with some delightful shots before falling to Highton lbw.

Nine runs later Highton struck again when he bowled Saleem for 28. Milnrow Professional Asif Sakir and  Abid Fazil produced a stand of 76 in 12 overs with some good running and despatching the bad balls before the returning Williams bowled Sakir for 44 and 3 runs later Rich Dempster forced Adnan Shafique to play on without scoring.

Milnrow skipper Aaron Brown was easily caught by Rhys Tierney off Williams with the score on 180 and Williams then picked up Fazil lbw for 32. Aiden Clarke was run out going for a second run by Dempster  before Williams picked up his 5th wicket he bowled Jonathan Glover to finish with superb figures of 13-4-35-5.

Dempster ended the innings when he had Brad Smith comfortable caught by Grant Jones on the boundary has Milnrow lost their last 7 wickets for 22 runs. It was going to be a decent chase and with the forecast rain Middleton would have to keep one eye on the run rate.

Middleton opened up with Williams and Wicketkeeper Leighton Le Carpentier and together they set about getting Middleton off to a the start and that is just what they did with a stand of 89 in 24 overs before Le Carpentier was caught and bowled by Tom Fitton for 47 in the next over without addition to the score Williams was caught by Glover off Sakir for 31.

James Tierney and Grant Jones took the score to 108 before Middleton took a slump when they lost 3 wickets without scoring a run. First of all James Tierney was bowled by Smith for 1 . Jones was caught and bowled by Sakir for 13 and the next ball Rhys Tierney was caught by Saleem.

Dempster and Martin Roberts needed to steady the ship evened though they were now behind the run rate due to loss of the cluster of wickets and this they did with a stand of 33 before Roberts was bowled by Smith for 12. Tom Rutter was the next to go with the score on 153 when he was run out for 6.

Danny Royle helped to put on 12 more runs before he was bowled by Smith for 2 and at this stage the game could have gone either way. Dempster and Richard Fitton took the score to 176 before Fitton was bowled by Glover for 2 to leave  Middleton needing 17 with 1 wicket left.

Dempster was joined by Highton and together they inched they way towards the total with some sensible batting and the winning runs came in the 49th over when 2 leg byes saw them over the line.

It was another top knock by Dempster 41no to follow his unbeaten 50 the previous week at Colne and Highton ended 5 no as Middleton picked up the maximum 12 points to close that gap at the top with Colne to just Two points.

Great credit must be given to Milnrow who fought right to the end.
